SB Forecast: April 26-27, 2008

Updated 4/24/08 8:35 am

Greetings,

After below normal temperatures last weekend, temperatures for this season's final weekend will jump back above normal.  Typical spring conditions, a taste of winter, a taste of summer.

Skies are clearing this Thursday morning as high pressure begins to nose into the area.  A weak weather system moved through Tuesday night and managed to drop a few inches of accumulations.  Normally, it wouldn't be much to talk about, but it was the biggest storm in nearly a month.

Temperatures warm a little on Thursday and Friday and peak this weekend with highs in the 50s.

The 2007/2008 ski season started slowly, but snowfall finally kicked in during mid December.  The holiday season had decent accumulations followed by the big wind and snowstorm of January 4th.  January continued with great accumulations and thoughts of an impressive snowpack.  However, a southwestern high pressure ridge, a typical pattern of la nina conditions, began pushing the jet stream into the Pacific Northwest in February.  That began to decrease the number of storms and by March, precipitation became a rare event.  As the Pacific Northwest continued to get pummeled, we have stayed very dry.  The light snowfall Wednesday morning was the first measurable snow of April.  What will next season bring?  We'll find out exactly one year from today.

Sugar Bowl Snow Depths as of Thursday morning April 24th:
Station A (near the base of Crow's Nest Chair): 36 inches, down 3 inches from last Thursday.
Station B (between Calif St & Station B runs):  110 inches, no change from last Thursday.

Forecast for 4/26/08-4/27/08:
Saturday will be sunny.  Lows in the upper 20s to low 30s, highs in the 50s.  Light winds.

Sunday will be mostly sunny with a few afternoon high clouds.  Lows in the 30s, highs in the 50s.  Afternoon southwest ridge breezes.

Weekend Travel Weather:
Problem free road conditions.

Extended:
Spring will be followed by summer, then summer by fall, then the snow and the forecasts return.

Have a great weekend and a great summer,
Dan
